Nice is the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera, lying on the pebbled shores of the Bay of Angels. Founded by the ancient Greeks, the city became a popular seaside resort for European aristocracy in the 19th century. Many artists have tied their lives to Nice. The Matisse Museum houses one of the largest collections of works by the master, who lived in Nice for nearly 40 years. The Marc Chagall Museum features the famous artist's works on biblical themes.
